Buderim's Bears for blood donors
Australian ginger processor, Buderim Ginger recently aligned itself with the Australian Red Cross’ Blood Service in a Queensland-wide drive to boost blood stocks. The unique partnership follows on from Buderim Ginger’s entry into the confectionery sector with the release in March 2003 of Buderim’s new Ginger Jubes (see food Aust 55 (5): 197, May 2003).

The product has received overwhelming support from consumers, and not just from Buderim’s traditional 40 year plus, market. Buderim Ginger’s National Retail Marketing Manager, Craig Todd said Buderim’s Ginger Bears were being sought from all age groups, with the jubes even drawing positive responses from children.

Mr Todd said Buderim Ginger targeted the Red Cross Blood Service to sample its Ginger Bears because of the synergies between both groups. “We thought we could give donors a little pick-me up after giving blood, by giving them an addition to the traditional biscuits they are offered afterwards”, he said.

The response to the Ginger Bears went very well, with the Blood Service’s Queensland head office in Brisbane running out of stocks within a couple of days, leading Buderim to ship another consignment of Ginger Bears to see the Red Cross through.

The mass sampling of over 5000 packets of Ginger Bears took place throughout Queensland, generated very favourable responses among donors, and helped fight off the traditional downturn in donor numbers leading into winter.
