Following its outstanding retail success at home, Australian ginger processor, Buderim Ginger is heading for New Zealand with its very addictive ‘Ginger Bears’ confectionery line and Buderim Ginger Refresher cordial, a fashionable addition to alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
New Zealand food marketer and distributor, Confectionery House NZ Ltd has been appointed to introduce Buderim’s new products into New Zealand together with Buderim’s range of value-added conserves and speciality lines including pickled ginger and cane sugar free ginger spread.
Ginger Bears are gummy bear-like jubes containing no artificial colours or flavourings and are popular among all age-groups.
Ginger’s historical health-qualities are driving sales of Ginger Bears among people in Australia who are prone to motion or travel sickness, as well as its naturopathic claim to fame as an excellent way to calm an upset stomach or ease the symptoms of morning sickness.
Buderim Ginger Refresher cordial has found an unexpectedly welcome reception on the home and hospitality fronts as a mixer that adds a healthy zing to juices, soda water or lemonade, and alcoholic drinks like vodka, Barcardi and Cointreau.
Paul Ritchie, General Manager of Sales & Marketing, says Buderim Ginger is confident of gaining mainstream shelf-space in New Zealand.
“An AC Nielsen survey conducted in 2002, confirmed what the company has experienced in retail growth, that ginger is increasing in popularity annually.
“In Australia, 73 per cent of adults consume ginger in various forms especially as ginger beer and fresh ginger, followed by baked products and medicinal lines.”
Most people in the 25-39 age group said they believed ginger was a nutritious, as well as a contemporary and stylish ingredient, and more widely consumed today.
Mr Ritchie said growth in the company’s newest product lines, Ginger Bears and Buderim Ginger Refresher had outstripped all forecasts.
“Based on our unique product offering, we have appointed Confectionery House to distribute our range given their extensive sales network throughout New Zealand.
“Confectionery House will supply New Zealand’s major supermarkets, independent retailers and route trade with our full range of retail products including conserves, marmalades and spreads, together with our popular crystallised and glace range, and speciality lines including baby stem ginger in syrup,” Mr Ritchie said.
Buderim Ginger is the world’s largest producer of sugar processed ginger and is a HACCP Certified manufacturer, sourcing ginger from local ginger farms on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
The company has been processing and developing new markets for its products for over 60 years, and Mr Ritchie said Buderim’s international reputation was underpinned by its focus on research and development, quality control and product innovation.
The New Zealand launch of the Buderim Ginger retail range will be supported with targeted marketing activities highlighting ginger’s historical health benefits and unique flavour profile that crosses over into sweet and savoury foods.
